Dave Glad - Heathen Bagpiper - Utah
I’ve been playing the highland bagpipes for most of my life. I was taught as a young boy by Dennis McMaster, former pipe major of the Salt Lake Scots Bagpipe Band. I played as a competitive bagpiper for many years and won several solo and pipe band competitions in the Western United States Pipe Band Association. In 1994 I traveled with the band to Glasgow Scotland to compete in the Bagpipe Band World Championships. What a great experience! I left the Salt Lake Scots Bagpipe Band in 1999 and went on to pursue other opportunities.
During the summer of 2005 Michael Gibbs, an old bagpiping buddy contacted me about forming an association of professional bagpipers. That October the Heathen Highlanders were born and we are still going strong. It’s in this group that I coined the catch name “Bagpipe Heathen.”
I have performed at just about every kind of event imaginable and had a lifetime of great experiences as a musician and performer. I’ve shared the joy at weddings and parties with my clients, and I’ve mourned with them at funerals of their loved ones. I’ve been honored to provide bagpiping services for the memorials of veterans, fire fighters and law enforcement officers. All true American heroes.
This is my legacy as a bagpiper… One that I will continue.

City’s lone bagpipe-maker is an industry of one
There’s a new noise in Rockaway - and it’s coming from a basement workshop.
Nate Banton - New York City’s only bagpipe maker - opened his business in a Neponsit bungalow four months ago. The 30-year-old craftsman specializes in two types of bagpipes: border pipes and small pipes.
“I’m interested in making hand-crafted pipes with an attention to detail,” said Banton, who grew up in Maine. “It’s a good business to be in. I make a product that people can make art with.”
Banton, who apprenticed for three years under noted pipe maker Seth Gallagher in upstate Cold Spring, N.Y., said he had a hard time breaking into the industry.

Piping at Weddings
Most frequently, the wedding party requests a piper to play outside the church before and after the wedding ceremony. Sometimes they also request tunes to be played during the ceremony inside the church, for example, during the processional, recessional, or candle lighting. On some occasions, piping is done at a wedding where the ceremony and reception are held in the same building. At one such wedding, the pipes were played on the balcony as guests arrived, played for the processional and recessional, and then played again for a short time as guests filed out to the cocktail hour.During outdoor weddings, the piping is usually incorporated into the ceremony. Another option is to have the pipes played at a cocktail hour or at a certain point during the reception. The cocktail hour option is especially popular where there is an outdoor garden or patio for the cocktail hour.
Featured Piper: Bill McEvoy
Bill McEvoy has been playing the Great Highland Bagpipe since 1986, when he began taking lessons with the Essex Shillelagh Pipes & Drums in West Orange, NJ. By 1992, he was Pipe Major of the band.
In 1998, Bill was a founding member of the South Park & District Pipe Band. Bill began competing solo in 2000, & quickly rose to the level of grade III on the competition circuit. Bill was hired as instructor for the Passaic County Emerald Society Pipe Band in 2002, and is still instructing there. He has played countless piping gigs, taught numerous students, and is currently enjoying his position as Pipe Major of South Park & District. Bill has performed at many weddings, parties, funerals, etc, and is available for any event – either solo, or with additional pipers and drummers.

Featured Piper: Jerry Cashion
Jerry Cashion is a former pipe sergeant of the original Air Force Bagpipe Band, as well as Whitehouse bagpiper for J.F. Kennedy. Jerry was also the pipe major for the Adirondack Pipes & Drums and the Galloway Gaelic Pipe Band, and has played for numerous weddings, funerals and ceromonies.
Jerry has been playing the pipes over forty years. In 1960 he joined the United States Air Force Pipe Band in Washington, D.C. and toured the world, representing the United States. In 1961 he was chosen to be a Whitehouse piper for John F. Kennedy, and in 1963 I played with the Air Force Pipe Band at the President’s graveside. Upon leaving the military, Jerry returned to Glens Falls, NY, where he taught English for thirty years. During this time, Jerry was the Pipe Major of the Adirondack Pipes & Drums of Glens Falls, as well as the Galloway Pipe Band.
Eastern NY and Vermont
Currently Jerry perform at weddings, funerals, gatherings and ceremonies throughout Eastern NY and Vermont. Jerry have several uniforms, including a French & Indian War reproduction of the famed 42nd Black Watch.
In addition Jerry give talks on the role of the highlanders during the French & Indian and Revolutionary Wars.
