The Southern rebel column of the 1798 Rebellion was surprised and defeated by government forces at Kilcumney Hill. The loss caused the rebels to disperse. While many returned to their homes, some attempted to rejoin the Northern column still camped at Croghan.

This event marked the collapse of coordinated rebel efforts in the south. The Northern column, though intact at Croghan, would soon face renewed pressure as the government regained the upper hand in Leinster.
