The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association was founded in 1930 as a governing body to oversee pipe band competition and to promote and encourage the development of pipe band culture throughout the world.

The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, North of Scotland Branch covers a wide geographic range from the city of Aberdeen in the East, through Banff & Buchan, Strathspey, Inverness, and the Highlands & Islands.

A code of rules was decided on for the running of the contests, a panel of competent adjudicators appointed along with an administrative structure to co-ordinate all the facets.

Danny Fitzgibbon, along with his two sons, Brian and Danny (Royal Marines), were prime movers in the formation of the once renowned Mount Carmel Pipe Band in 1953, which was based in Salford and which was, under the guidance of P/M Walter MacMinn, to become the only English band ever to attain Grade 1 status.
