The Shamrock and Thistle Pipe Band was founded in February 1974 under the direction and tutelage of Pipe Major Dennis Staer and Drum Sergeant, William King, Sr. The original idea for the band was that of James Curry, Esquire, a Toms River attorney whose love of bagpipe music, although not a player, promoted the initial gathering of prospective students. Through long and tedious lessons, and countless hours of practice, the band began to emerge. They had only been under the instruction of George Watts and Bob McCourt for a year when six fledgling pipers, clad in black slacks and white shirts, made their piping debut at a Jersey Shore Irish American Club Dance in May, 1985. The entertainment was a success and the performance became the cornerstone of the ambitious and ever-growing pipe band. Within a year the newly formed band numbered fifteen talented and eager-to-learn musicians.

The High Desert Pipes and Drums of Albuquerque, NM, is a non-profit organization devoted to the cultivation, preservation, and promotion of Scottish bagpiping and drumming. The band was founded in 1994 by Pipe Major Bill Horn and soon established itself as a Grade IV competition band. In 1997, HDP&D made its first appearance at the World Pipe Band Championships (or ‘The Worlds’) in Scotland.

edward p. maloney memorial pipe band
Our band is named in honor of Edward Patrick Maloney, a founder and charter member of the New York City Police Department Emerald Society Pipe and Drum band, considered in pipe circles to be the Notre Dame of bagpipe bands. The NYPD band was formed in 1960 and made its debut in the 1961 St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City. Mr. Maloney, a son of Irish immigrants, served in the Navy during the Korean War and later logged 21 years on the NYPD. He was an active bandsman at the time of his death in May 2000.
